The swimming dominated the late schedule on the fourth day of the Paris Games as Britain won the men's 4x200m freestyle relay, Ireland's Daniel Wiffen won the men's 800m freestyle and Australia's Kaylee McKeown won the women's 100m backstroke

Away from the pool, Simone Biles became the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history when she helped lead her team to gold in Tuesday’s final. But there was disappointment for United States flag bearer Coco Gauff, who crashed out of the tennis singles in controversial circ*mstances.

Superstar men's double pairs Rafael Nadal/Carlos Alcaraz and Andy Murray/Dan Evans both advanced to the quarterfinal in dramatic fashion, winning match tiebreaks.

The day did not begin in ideal circ*mstances with the news that officials had postponed the men’s Olympic triathlon from Tuesday to Wednesday because of elevated bacteria levels in the River Seine.

The other silver medalist for USA was Regan Smith in the women's 100m backstroke as she finished behind Australia's Kaylee McKeown.

“I knew it was going to be such a fight," said Smith. "Kaylee is an exceptional competitor, and Katherine broke 58 (seconds) this year, so this is the fastest 100 backstroke final ever.

"The key was to stay in my own lane, in my own race. I wanted to leave it all in the pool for this amazing crowd and that’s what I did. It’s really special."

Bobby Finke entered today's men's 800m freestyle as the defending Olympic champion, but he had to settle for the silver medal behind an imperious performance from Daniel Wiffen.

“I’d be lying If I said I wasn’t disappointed, I was the first loser," said Finke. "It always stings to not be able to defend your title. But Daniel is a little younger than me, and I have really big hopes for his future in the sport. I was doing what I could to try and catch him.

"Fifteen metres out, I was trying to swing my body as fast as I could, but Dan got me. I was really trying.

"I like winning. It sucks not to win. I did the best I could and I've got to be proud of that. The silver is nothing to be disappointed in. I've got to take it as motivation going into the mile."

USA has been beaten 22-14 by Serbia in the men's 3x3 basketball.

It was easy to see why Serbia is the best team in the world. All four of their players stand 6-foot-6 or taller and have played together for over 10 years.

USA held an early 10-9 lead after Dylan Travis' floater but Serbia's high-low was too much. They ran the same set three times in a row, exposing the lack of size in the U.S. team and making each shot. At the halfway point, Serbia had only missed one shot as a team.

USA came into the game with a 4-2 record against Serbia's top 3x3 team that features three players from their Olympic team, but today the Europeans prevailed.

USA's Jimmer Fredette finished with four points — he and his teammates will look to get back on track tomorrow against Poland at 4:35 p.m. ET.

USA increased their tally to 26 medals today, which is eight medals than any other nation.

But it is Japan who are top of the medal table at this stage of the Games having accumulated seven gold medals across the first four days.

A familiar feeling for the British swimmers who have defended their gold medal, but a brand new one for those Americans who did not make the podium in Tokyo three years ago.

Having touched on those extraordinary scenes at Roland Garros, let's bring it back to La Defense and we'll take a look at the finishing times for the men's 4x200m freestyle relay.

If you have followed Andy Murray's career at all, then you will know about his tendency to do everything the hard way.

And it looked tonight as if him and fellow Brit Dan Evans would make light work of Belgian pair Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen after winning the first set 6-3.

But an error-strewn second-set tiebreak ended 10-8 in favour of the Belgians and they took the momentum into the match tiebreak. Gille and Vliegen brought up two match points — one of which on their own serve — but they were both saved by Murray and Evans who only needed one of their own.

Cue pandemonium at Roland Garros as those in the crowd celebrated the continuation of Murray's increasingly unbelievable tennis career. Him and Evans are into the quarterfinal where they could face American pair Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul.

What a feeling it must be to win a gold medal in a team event like the relay.

I'm not sure Tom Dean could have opened his mouth any wider to celebrate that one!

9.26pm and it’s gold for Britain in the men’s 200m freestyle relay. 9.28pm and Andy Murray and Dan Evans survive facing two match points to reach the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles in tennis.

Great Britain men win gold in the 4x200 free relay, Team USA takes silver. Australia third.

Fun, fun race and big one for the Americans, who did not medal in this relay in Tokyo.

The Brits have won gold in two consecutive Games.

A dominant Britain performance brings the gold medal as Duncan Scott ensures he and his team-mates defend their title on the Olympic stage with a time of 6:59.43!

USA come home in second for the silver medal, but they were never likely to take the gold with a 1.35 second gap to the winners.

Australia raced home in third for the bronze medal.

The fastest qualifiers are showing exactly why that was the case as Britain still lead at the start of leg four.

USA are mounting a strong challenge in second, just 0.50 seconds behind with Australia still in third with a 1.23 seconds gap to the leaders.

It looked like we might have a big change for leg three but Britain's Tom Dean powered through to maintain his team's advantage.

USA moved into third, 0.49 seconds behind the Brits while Australia moved into third, 1.15 back from the leaders.

Britain's James Guy was ahead for the entirety of that first leg and he hands over the advantage to Tom Dean for the second leg.

They led Germany by 0.22 seconds and USA by 0.46 seconds.

Now, time for the big one!

The French fans inside La Defense are on their feet again as Leon Marchand books his place in yet another final at these Games.

He flew to the front of that second semifinal and never looked back, finishing first and qualifying fastest.

He will be back tomorrow for the final, as will these seven other swimmers:

Sir Andy Murray and Dan Evans are at it again. Things had been going so smoothly, with the British duo winning the first set of their quarterfinal against Belgium’s Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen 6-3.

But they have just lost a second set tiebreak 10-8 and we’re headed to a tiebreaker that will decide the match.

There was so much drama when Murray and Evans saved a frankly ludicrous five match points in their 2-6, 7-6(7-5), 11-9 victory over Japan’s Taro Daniel and Kei Nishikori. And it looks as though we are set for more here.

A reminder: Murray has said he will retire from tennis for good after this tournament. Lose this tiebreaker and the curtain will come down on his glorious career.

We have just seen the first of the semifinals for the men's 200m breaststroke.

Another success for an Australian swimmer as Zac Stubblety-Cook won that one with a time of 2:08.57. In fourth was USA's Josh Matheny who will hope his time of 2:09.70 is enough to secure him a place in the final.

In the second semifinal is Frenchman Leon Marchand as well as Matt Fallon of the USA. Prepare for more ear-splitting noise inside La Defense!
